Electric bicycles are selling well in the Netherlands

According to data from the Dutch Bicycle Industry Association (Bovag) and the Royal Dutch Automobile Association (RaiVereniging), bicycle sales in the Netherlands declined again in 2024, with new bicycle sales dropping to a ten-year low of 858,000 units—a 7% decrease compared to 2023. This trend was not observed between 2016 and 2020, when the bicycle market experienced steady growth, with sales exceeding 1.1 million units in both 2019 and 2020.

Despite the overall decline in sales, electric bicycles (e-bikes) continue to show strong market demand. Last year, e-bikes accounted for 48% of all new bicycle sales and 72% of total revenue. Over the past four years, revenue has remained stable, exceeding €1.5 billion in 2024. The average price of an e-bike was €2,719, significantly higher than that of a traditional bicycle (€1,809). Notably, fat-tire e-bikes performed exceptionally well, with sales reaching 111,000 units. Industry analysts attribute the decline in sales partly to delivery issues and partly to consumers entering a "consolidation phase" following a peak in sales.
